Parkinson’s Support Program

Parkinson’s Disease is a disease of the nervous system that affects over two million Americans.  Although it is most common in people over the age of 50, it can occur in younger individuals.  With the help of family, physicians and medications people with Parkinson’s Disease can maintain active and productive lives for many years.

The Parkinson’s Support Group offers companionship, information, encouragement, safety, socialization and education to the individual and caregiver.  It allows the person to realize that they are not alone, introducing ways in which they can better cope with the disease.

The support group meets the 3rd Thursday of the month at 2:00 p.m. in the East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging conference room located at 2005 East Highland Drive Jonesboro, Arkansas  72403.

Professional speakers, a resource library and group sharing make up the function of the meetings.  A monthly newsletter is also sent out to all participants.  The newsletter covers new medical information as well as entertaining articles.

A Parkinson’s Disease exercise class is also available to the individual who has the disease as well as to their caregivers.  For individuals with Parkinson’s Disease exercise helps to improve body strength and muscle tone and is believed to help slow the progression of the condition.  Not only does exercise improve general health and well-being, it seems to improve the body’s response to dopamine – a component of most Parkinson’s patient’s medication.

The exercise class meets every Monday and Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the agency conference room.  The classes are free of charge.
